Man, i havent updated this blog in forever. DRASTIC APOLOGIES. i've been busy at work and it's been one hell of a ride. i'm on my internship now and i'm currently attached to MTV. it's a great gig, that's for sure. i get to meet so many different people, i get to hang out with rock stars and i get to finally do something that i love, and that is music. i love meeting so many different people and i love that everyday about it is different than the one before. and it makes life worth living again. plus, i have celebrities as friends now, totally pushed my social status up a notch, HAHA. but, i digress.

part of a celebrity entourage, i get free passes to the coolest events of the year. and i got to attend the Singapore Fashion Festival 2008. Front row seat, VIP passes, what's not to love? I attended the Redken hair show, which was pretty awesome, but truly, the defining show, would have to be the closing show, by Calvin Klein. Everybody who's anybody turns up for this last show, dressed up to the nines, looking all chic and elegant. Goes with the set of Calvin Klein. A completely white layout, and a sloping runway, it has the name Calvin klein vomitted all over it. And the clothes were minimalist, once again, true to the name. But there were playful punches of colour here and there. turquoise, fuschia, neon pink, peach, mixed with the basics. Their spring/summer collection saw much of slouchy cuts, baggy pants, and blouses that hung loosely off the skinny frames of the female models versus fitted pants and shirts on the males. It was a good mix of casual and formal. buttoned down shirts with cut-offs, ankle high sandals with fitted jackets. creative in the trendiest manner possible.

And Emma Pei is THE model to look out for.She is gorgeous in person and I never thought I would say this about my asian self, but damn right i'm proud to be one thanks to her! (honestly i only whipped out my camera to take pictures of just her alone) she's got flawless skin, and truly, i want her face. i want her everything for that matter! damnit. And this other Asian model was GORGEOUS. wtf, why can't i look like that. grrr.
i don't really know what her name is. i think it's hyoni kang, but i could be wrong. whatever it is, i thought the Asian models were alot better than the caucasian ones. show some asian love y'all! the slit eyes thing really works for me at times. i just hate my fucking flat nose. but i'll leave my complains for another day. for now, i'm content with just admiring their faces. (:

twas a good night.

of course we finished it with a night of shesha, pita bread, hummus and a whole load of laughs and gossips. it was a wonderful day. life is good again! i'm back bitches.

Kevyn Aucoin, make up legend and man responsible for the fame of Cindy Crawford upon doing her first Vogue cover. I watched an episode of Sex and The City recently, "The Real Me", and there he was, tall, sophisticated and telling carrie bradshaw he loved her work while doing her make up for the fashion show. It grew into an obsession. I read up about him night after night and all I can say is that this man, truly, is an amazing talent. I love his spirit when it came to pursuing dreams, his energy when it came to make-up, his love for people and his belief that beauty came from the inside. It is unfortunate that the world should lose yet another beautiful human being, someone who had so much life and spirit. From a small town boy, to a broke struggling artist in New York, and then subsequently to land a big break that opened so many doors for him, this man is now my greatest inspiration. He passed, May 7th, 2002.

The land where the girls are pretty and the boys are incredibly cute. Not forgetting fresh sashimi and the place of which sushi originated from. The city that which fashion is an everyday affair, Japan. Be it in the hearts of Harijuku, or Shibuya, it is without a doubt that everyone there is original and unique in their own style. I would love to visit that city someday, to experience its pulsating culture, and at some point in time, embrace my asian culture to its gloriest. I've got slit eyes, that's already half the battle won when it comes to fitting in (: The girls there have got so much spunk, it's amazing. They throw on some tattered denim shorts, a leather jacket, some chunky army boots, lots of attitude and style to top it off, and off they go, looking incredible as ever. It's a wonder how anyone can piece two totally unconventional piece of clothings together and still look amazing, is a wonder. and damn, you gotta love a city that has its men looking like they've just walked out of a catalogue or a runway show. mmm yum. come on now men of singapore, buck up!

I am at it yet again ladies and gentlemen. That's right, i'm thinking of getting inked. It could be probably be a procrastination on my part from the onslaught of work i have yet to finish and stress from the coming exams of which i havent studied for, but watching Miami Ink has once again managed to conjure up my desire for another tattoo.

I remember laying on the table and telling elson (my tattoo artist) that the tattoo i was getting then was probably going to be my only tattoo, ever. Of course, being the cynic and skeptical individual that he is, he said i'll be back for more. And I can't say he was wrong.

I really don't know what it is about tattoos that is so alluring. and in this day and age, the stigma of having tattoos are still omnipresent. But I really do believe it truly is an artform. And these tattoo artists, they really are dedicated to their line of work. It isn't all fun and games and I know that they put alot of hardwork into what they do, because to them it isn't just tattooing, it's an art. And I love that, I love their devotion and time to creating art, since I am art lover myself. And in Chris Nunez's words from Miami Ink, what is better than to have your artwork put permanently on someone else?

The pain of getting a tattoo isn't exactly a walk in the park, but the results of all that excruciating pain, and hours of not feeling your ass, is definitely worth all that.

Of course, I do believe everything should be done in moderation. There are some people covered with tattoos all over but without putting much thought into what they put on their body. I do believe every tattoo has to have a meaning, a representation of who you are, a dedication to someone, something. And this is exactly why I love tattoos, because they tell a story. And I want to be able to look at that tattoo and know that it holds a special meaning to me, to someone, to something. That, to me, is the beauty of tattoos.

So what's next on my list of conquest? Stars on my foot, that's a definite. And hopefully, a full sleeve when I am older, with a job secure enough to ensure that the sleeve wouldnt hinder my line of work, like owning my own business, hopefully with my best friend in good ol' texas! (: or being somewhere in the creative industry. a full sleeve, woah, tough waters to be treading in, especially for a girl. but hey, dare to dream baby. dare to dream(:

Fighting Against Fugly Asian Makeup

In keeping with the beauty roll we are on...

..Is it just me, or does no one have any clue how to makeup Oriental faces? Look at the below picture from Sephora.com, as an example of what I imagine they think looks very dramatic and sexy...

Well, they're wrong.

Am I the only person who thinks that looks HORRIBLE?An otherwise pretty Oriental girl looks like a bloody panda bear. How the hell did this get published anywhere? On a website as reputable as Sephora, that sells beauty products, no less?

On the flipside, the actress Nan Zhang from the TV show Gossip Girls looks awesome here:

(even though it is tellingly obvious that her nose has been contoured to death... still, better than Ms. Punched-Out above)

What's the deal? It's the 21st century. You'd think that people would have figured out how to work with Oriental faces by now right? It's really not that hard. We need to quit waiting around for a way to copy Occidental styles verbatim, and switch them around to suit our own needs.

Here's a couple of tips from yours truly, especially for girls girls who are either heavy lidded or monolidded..... after years (and I do mean years) of trial and error, and with no help at all from any books/magazines/websites...!

Color Rules

+ In general, purples and greens looks incredible on Oriental skin, which usually have yellow-undertones. Gold and bronze tones are great for a neutral look and are virtually idiot-proof.

A Window Frame

+ Eyeliner should be your best friend, starting now. I suggest gel liners for beginners, because pencils usually smudge everywhere on Oriental eyes, whereas gel liners are smooth to apply but not as tricky as liquid liners, and have much better staying power. If you find that a lot of your lid 'disappears' under your eyes when you open them, then I strongly suggest lining as far up as you dare. This can slightly alter the shape of your eyes, giving it a rounder, almond appearance, rather than a sleepy, squinty look (i.e. my face in the morning)

The Art of Blending

+ Mad-ass smoky eyes with a defined 'crease' line do NOT suit all Oriental eyes, especially girls who don't have a crease (ie monolidders). The higher you apply your shadow, the more blending you need to do. It's a skill you should probably start cultivating now, if you haven't already. I suggest starting out with neutrals, fading from dark to light from the lashline to the browbone (bottom to top), or from the tear ducts to the outer corners (left to right and vice versa).

When you get used to it, start experimenting with colors. As shown in the picture below, I've created the illusion of a 'crease' even though I don't actually have one at all, and it still works a lot better than Sephora's nightmare face... why?
1) Complimentary colors: Dirty slate-grey/muddy blues don't look good on anyone's skin...generally. Especially in such great quantity. Using a bright color that plays up my natural skintone is much better.
2) Adhering to the Natural Eye Socket: Poke around your lids and feel where your natural brow bones an eyesockets are, and follow that. Nature can't go wrong. Creating an artificial crease that's too high or low or wide will look weird.
3) Blend, Blend, Blend! : Needless to say, blocks of color look unfinished and clownish. Girls with deep creases might be able to get away with it a little better, but not me! By carefully blending out colors, the eye is given the illusion of shape, dimensions and depths. I hope you guys found this useful! Remember to keep experimenting until you find what works for you!

I can't get enough of MAC's Tinted Lip Conditioner with SPF 15! ($14.50 at MAC stores)

I got it in Petting Pink, a light pink color which goes on sheer, adds a hint of color and moisturizers like nothing else. Lips stay dewy and moist all day -- no chapping, flapping and best of all, no hassle that goes along with using lipsticks.

Totally worth the money...this huge pot lasts forever! I'm thinking of getting one in all six colors... :D

Perfect Lashes

I recently purchased Maybelline Volum' Express - Waterproof mascara off Drugstore.com (they're having a sale on it!)...and it's the best drugstore mascara I've yet to find!

So here's one foolproof, Asian girl's guide to getting awesome, daytime lashes, without resorting to falsies:

1) Wash your face. Make sure lashes are completely clean and dry. Even slightly damp lashes won't hold curl properly, and mascara might end up looking clumpy. Do the rest of your makeup first and let your lashes dry out completely.

2) Using an eyelash curler (Shiseido, Shu Uemura and even E.L.F make great curlers), curl at the base of lashes by holding and 'pumping' lash curler for a few seconds. Move up slightly along lashes and repeat. For even better hold, heat curler with a hair dryer, but be careful not to burn your skin!

3) Apply a thin layer of a primer (I use Shiseido's Mascara Base) to help fatten and condition lashes, as well as hold curl. Don't overload your lashes with primer, that will just undo the curl and look gunky.

4) Apply Maybelline Volum' Express on lashes. The thin brush lets you get into little corners and small hairs. Run it from the base of lashes right up to the tip, in an outward-upward motion, being careful to maintain curl. Apply as many coats as you think you need, although I personally don't do more than two.
*Also, I hate wiggling the brush at the base of my lashes. It makes them clump together. But that's just a personal preference. If it's worked for you, stick with it!

5) Run lashes through a lash comb, like one from Tarte. If needed, brush through with a clean mascara brush on the other end. (It's always nice to buy a multi-taking tool!)

7) Extra Step for Extra Oomph: Brush the tips of lashes with Shu Uemura's Lash Xtension Mascara for even longer lashes! Run the brush just along the tips, not along the entire length of lashes.

6) Let lashes dry fully. Don't attempt to curl them again until they are totally dry, or the mascara will just smudge off on your curlers and you'll end up doing more damage than good.

P/S If you're like me, and use waterproof mascaras often, and curl your lashes to death, do your flutteries a favor and invest in some lash conditioners. Ardell and Talika both make good ones, and they're supposed to help lashes grow longer and fuller as well as protect them for the constant wear 'n' tear of mascara usage!

finally, im officially an adult, even though i doubt i act like one. there was so much build up to the big day and i cant say im disappointed. in fact, it turned out to be one of the best nights/best party ive ever had.

it was totally random but i had my party at Macdonald's (: a full-on kids party but my theme was celebrity skanks and hoes. haha, now aren't you proud of it. i went as paris hilton/mary-kate olsen depending.

and i love this picture.look at us! it's pete doherty, Mary-kate Olsen and Kate Moss. Seriously I am so proud of you guys! Moses, you totally surpassed my expectations and Nicole, man, ure working it girl! They win best-dressed hands down (:

I love LOVE the outfit (Moses's!), the tweed fedora, the wooly trenchcoat, a simple blue stripped shirt with an open collar and a tie hung ever so casually, and skinny jeans that arent GLUED to his ankles but rather, hangs nice and snug around his hips. Seriously dude, you totally impressed me that day. And better still, you don't look stoned and washed out like Pete is. haha. good job!
although i think in this picture he was trying to do an impression of pete's classic drugged-out face, hence..this. but more importantly, let's focus on nicole!
Now this girl here has totally evolved, from the likes of specs and long hair, she's totally hot stuff now. ooh. and her kate moss impression was spot-on.
first, the classic head band, then there's the jacky-os, the wooden chunky bangles, an embellish tunic top with black ankle leggings (sorry for the cropped picture! this was the best one i could find), the casual canvas messenger bag and round toe mary janes (oh so cute, i wished i could show u guys, dammmit!). it spells of kate moss's casual chic and glam without trying too hard. you guys make a great couple, pity you guys couldnt work things out. kate moss and pete doherty i meant. HAHAHAHA.

i, on the other hand, was in my skank outfit full on. i had initially gone for the paris hilton, just woke up from my boyfriend's place kinda look. but most of them insisted i was like mary-kate with the red nails and lots and lots of accesories, so yay. haha
i was wearing my brother's white shirt, and a black belt cinch at the hips. it was so skanky, i got killer stares just walking into the vicinity of mac's because i guess it was a family place and indecent exposure isn't condoned. but hey it's my party i can do whatever the hell i want.

all in all, it tops every party ive had or been to, ever.

but now that the day is over, it's hard to grapple with the fact that i am 21. it's a big deal, and i still havent figured out what i really want to do with my life. that scares me alittle. but yet there is something exciting about this uncertainty. we'll see (:

but i just want to tell every single one of my friends, that i love you guys. you guys make my life worthwhile. truly, from the bottom of my heart. xoxo

Boots for Everybody

In case you haven't noticed, boots are everywhere this season. They are simply unavoidable! Whether you're clunking down the streets in colorful, printed galoshes to avoid the winter snow/rain (global warming makes it unpredictable!), or knee-high lace-ups with a 5-inch stacked heel, or a cute bootie like above, you can be assured that you're ahead on the fashion radar. Or at least, right in the middle of it!

My tips? Invest in a good pair of boots in a dark, neutral tone; ones that will last forever and weather any trend changes.

+ Ankle boots are hot this season and can even be worn through the warmer seasons. Pick up a pair that flatters your legs with a pointed toe and a slight heel or wedge. Don't go for anything in an outrageous color; it's not going to last longer than this fall! Something like this should do the trick.
+ Mid-calf boots are not universally flattering, beware! In general, try to get one that's loose fitting at the top and slouchy, instead of tapered and skin-tight. This gives you the widest range of options when it comes to mixing and matching it with the rest of your clothes. A heel will probably work best for those who are not blessed in the long-and-lean leg arena.
+ Knee-highs will always be in fashion, with jeans tucked in or over tights and a skirt. How not to look like you came tromping off the farm? Get one in a luxe fabric, like suede. To up the fashion-forward-factor, try to get one that comes with hardware- sturdy buckles and clasps for that hardy, punk feel. Heel or no heel, they look great either way.

THIS show is fucking hilarious. I remember shacking up with Mary in New York, eating cereal and laughing at every single moment throughout the whole show. Gay men are truly girl's best friend. They make you laugh without having to deal with the emotional mess like 'is he into me?' 'are we gonna sleep together?' 'what does he mean when he says this' and all that nonsense. Gay men are brutally honest when it comes to fashion and will tell you if you look like shit or have put on weight. This is why I love this show. They are funny, entertaining and hell, their sense of style is simply amazing. Carson's my favourite character and aptly enough he is in charge of fashion. He is so gay, but that's what make him him y'noe? You can always count these men to get you through the worst of days, break-up trauma included. QUEER EYE FOR A STRAIGHT GUY IS THE SHIT. (:

Our Fashionable Friend

Everyone knows Jennifer Aniston right? Her turn as Rachel, the romance and break-up with Brad Pitt, and her unwavering sense of personal style and poise.

These are two incredibly simple and casual looks, to get you from work to play in a flash.

Take 1: Black is always in.
+ Show off your killer legs (you didn't jog all those miles for nothing honey) with black or navy shorts (Wet Seal has plenty of in a myriad of designs and shades). Make sure they're not too snug or you risk looking like a hoochie-mama! Instead, pick something that sits right above your hipbone and reaches just above mid-thigh with a slight flare. Legs will look smaller in comparison.
+ Get a gorgeous fitted top (Victoria's Secret makes great, sexy shirts) in a color near similar (if not black, try dark charcoal, or perhaps navy blue). Tuck it neatly into shorts to create a lean, streamlined effect.
+ Add killer strappy heels. No clunky platforms or stumpy flats here!

The ever timeless classic chick flick, Clueless. There's so much to love about this movie. Alicia Silverstone and her entourage of friends in their mini skirts and furry pens. Oh, how I wished life could be a whirlwind of checkered skirts, knee high socks, lollipops and ponytails. And you know what's the best part? She's got an automated dressing room. That tops everything else, hands down.

Today marks the first of my many days to come as an intern at style magazine. It was a rather slow start with making calls, updating the fashion directory, then came the goodies. I got to put the book together, which is a mock up of the coming fashion issue and I gotta say, it was perfect. It all sounds so devil wears prada, even typing all these down gives me the shivers. But I love, love the fashion industry. There is so much to see, to learn and the energy that it gives is simply amazing. I love my editor, Mina. She is quirky, hilarious, a spirit true to the fashion industry. There are coming events to attend, styling to be done, models to be booked, articles to be written. I can do this, this is what I was made to do. I can feel it just by sitting there amongst the cubicles, the tapping of keyboards, ringing of phones. I feel alive because I know this is what I was made for. (:

Bright outerwear

Regardless of season, layering is always in. For the summers, try a light-weight vest in a bright color like the gold on Sienna Miller picks below, or in cooler weather, try a heavier, woolen jacket in a sharp bolero style and eye-popping hue. And remember to keep the rest of your clothes neutral, and accessories pared down to the bare minimum!

Fearless Headgear & Boots

It's important to keep balanced on top and below; a wool beanie and corduroy conductor's cap get paired with skinnies and heavy boots.

Bobbi Brown's Gel Eyeliner and Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush

This is a great combo. I picked it up in Cobalt Ink, an incredibly dark navy blue (it practically looks black). By the way, try using blues..they have been proven to make eyes appear brighter and whiter, rather than blacks and brown.

The brush is fine and somewhat stiff and allows you to draw thin lines and the long, slim handle is great for those with unsteady hands. The eyeliner itself is fantastic! Dries really fast so you don't have time to screw it up, virtually smudge-proof and waterproof! Also, the tiniest bit of it goes a LOOOONG way, so don't be over-using this product! A light hand it important here.

This has replaced my usual liquid liner, especially on my lower lids, because liquid liners don't dry as fast as I need them to and sometimes my lashes smear them all over the place. Instead, the brush ensures that gel liners go where they need to, and also, you can use the brush on anything else! Simply dip it in water, squeeze out the excess, and use your preferred color to custom make you own eyeliner!

Lovely maxmara jacket, striped brown tube dress, black pumps, white coach hobo bag, bracelets, feather pendant, chunky earrings, hippie-braided hair. sort of a casual, flirty thing.

(in case anyone was wondering, i got my hair permed in Singapore, so no, I don't naturally have curly hair....I wish! However, I do help it along by running curl-cream through damp hair before sticking them up in large curlers and leaving to air-dry. If you're in a hurry, you could blow-dry it, but I wouldn't recommend it for daily use....your hair will frizz and dry out! I go read a book or just chill out for an hour or two and then carefully unravel curlers, tilt my head over and shake curls out. Add some mousse for a little volume in the crown. and ta-da! that's it!

p/s i only do this on weekends. i'm too lazy otherwise. ;) )

I love Talika's Lash Conditioner!

I'm generally a very skeptical person when it comes to 'miracle' potions of any sort, and Talkia claims that this product will "Grow your lashes in 28 days".

Well, here's my non-biased, tried-and-tested review for all you gorgeous girls out there, who may or may not even need this product!

1) It needs to be applied at least twice a day, on clean, makeup free lashes. I usually do it first thing in the morning and last thing at night, after cleansing. Make sure to concentrate the formula in the root area; best way to do this is to hold the brush vertically and run the tip along the roots.

2) It has to be applied daily, and if you have the will-power to do this, then you'll notice growth. If you slack off on the routine, then.... results might not be quite what you want.

I've been doing this for the last week or so, and I've already noticed a significant increase in thickness and length, even on my lower eyelashes! It's not growing to fake-eyelash proportions, but it is a lot better than before!

Things to take note of:
- In my experience, the gel-like product doesn't sting eyes, but obviously, don't go poking your eyes out!
- Be patient! It doesn't work overnight.
- If you are the sort who wears mascara everyday (especially waterproof formula), this product is great to prevent lashes from growing brittle and falling out.. yes, it can happen!

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

I am personally in two-minds about this whole outfit. I can see that she's trying to do the avant-guarde, Annie Hall thing, and that's fine. But I can't help but feel that she could have done a lot better.

But for the sake of it, let's break it down:
I love the hat, simple top and bag, and the way she's rocking neutral and basic colors. When wearing an out-there outfit, it's always best to keep to low-key colors.

Unfortunately, the proportions of the pants aren't working for me. It doesn't look flattering at all, and makes her looks like she has saddlebags to rival pack-mules. Not attractive. It also shortens her legs, making what must have been a petite girl look downright stumpy and fat. Why would anyone do that to herself??? And what is that massive pleat doing on her belly? Is the belt supposed to help 'cinch' things? Because if so, it's NOT working.

Also, the sandals don't seem to be in keeping with the entire theme she's trying to rock. Perhaps some mary-janes would have worked better, in an unexpected color. It's a hard call. Damnit, if only those pants were a tad shorter or longer! Make up your mind!

That's my two-cents worth. What do you guys think? On, or off the street??

the gyllenhaal parents must be proud of their 2 kids, both brimming with charm and talent. the world is unfair people, deal with it.

i love jake gyllenhaal (for obvious reasons) but i love his sister, maggie, just as much. she may not be conventionally pretty by hollywood standards, but this girl definitely does not let cliches of the hollywood industry get in her way. i love how she always appears effortlessly fresh, not overly made up or too over the top. her style is minimalist chic, and she looks so elegant all the time. not to mention, those gorgeous jade green eyes of hers. oh...sigh.

i totally loved, LOVED her in this chanel couture that she wore to one of the many award ceremonies she attended. i love the hair-do, very very audrey hepburn and the lace details of the gown, bringing out this really subtly sexy side of hers. not everyone can pull off a turtle neck, this girl definitely can!

She is absolutely adorable! You wouldn't be able to tell that she's pint-sized in real life, with the gorgeous figure and clothes she wears. I love this stripey dress of hers, paired with gold chandelier earrings and simple shoes/clutch... it's casual and yet classy.
Now this outfit I wonder about, but I think she pulled it off. I very much doubt that I would dare venture out of the house in a sheer Victorian blouse with piping, high boots and a gold scarf, but she looks very put-together, not awkward.

Next, we feature Bilson's favored item: jackets, or some form of outerwear. She always picks exactly the right one, to dress up a pair of jeans for the red carpet, or to take into town on a sunday afternoon.

One Lash Away

Maybelline's Define-a-Lash for $7.99 from most drugstores.

I've had the hardest time finding a mascara that doesn't weigh my eyelashes down, and is affordable -- Shu Uemura does some good ones, but the price tag is too steep for a broke college student like me! I admit that i bought this merely because i liked the green packaging (shallow, I know) but I wasn't disappointed.

It did an amazing job of lengthening my lower eyelashes and the more coats I applied, the longer they got. Trust me, it's addictive. It did about the same in terms of lengthening for my upper lashes and wasn't too heavy that they got weighted down (which happens to me with almost any other formula i.e. Benefits Bad Gal Lash). This formula is waterproof as well, and it didn't streak or run or smudge all day long which is fantastic!

Here are the before and after pictures....please excuse my lack of makeup and freckly face!

Unfortunately, there is a dark side. It has a tendency to get clumpy, but a eyelash comb should easily fix that. It doesn't deliver very much volume, and you may run the risk of having 'spidery' eyelashes. Also, if you have small Asian eyes like mine, with lashes that tend to droop and are stick straight, always make sure you curl them before hand with a good eyelash curler, and NEVER load up on the mascara. Two coats at most should be enough, otherwise 'droopage' might occur! (This applies to any mascara, not just Define-A-Lash)Jo says:
On the topic of eyelashes and such, i would really like to try out some crazy false eyelashes. Everyone should check out the crazy ass ones they have on The Make-up Store. in my honest opinion, i may never walk out of my house in the light of day sporting red eyelashes anytime soon..but i shall aspire to do just that. er, i hope. come on ppl, live a little and get rockin':) weight lifting eyelashes truly does wonders to a person's face. trust me on that one.

it's been a tough few weeks, but i think ill survive. lately i have been going through bouts of insecurities about who i am, where am i headed, amongst everything else.

but nonetheless, i finally had a chance to get out and meet some friends, have a drink, and watch harry potter!:)

so, layering is in this season, im guessing. and you look so preppy and cute, u cant go wrong at all! hence, for all who havent gotten down to getting a simple plain white t, u had better start stocking up. anyway, who cares even if it's an ol' ratty hanes tee, or one that u can get $2 from a market, ure wearing it inside anyway.

im wearing a brown dress with blue prints that i got from bangkok (yet, again!). prints are so hot this season, so the bolder the better:) but yeah, it is THAT simple. a sleeveless dress over a white collared tee, some chunky bangles, adorable ear-rings and a smile to go along.

loved loved loved this girl in 'Garden State'. Natalie Portman is yet another star to keep a look out for. it isnt just her pretty looks that catches hollywood's attention, she has done some amazing acting as well. and well..not everyone can look as good as her, bald.

there's nothing not to love about this fresh-faced beauty. she looks immecably clean and chic as always, and her hair! dang! i love her hair. i mean, not when she was bald, although i wouldnt mind looking like that if i ever were to shave bald. note: ever being the definitive. but u gotta admit, she HAD great hair. i love the way she pulls it back, buns it up, looking so together all the time. she's a no-fuss-no-muss kinda girl, and is always minimalistic in her wardrobe. that isn't always a bad thing. she wears her clothes well, and this girl really wears confidence and attitude like a patch on her shoulder, and that in the name of fashion, is real beauty.

Recognize the shirt? yeah. I'm really good at recycling my clothes. This is my take on men-inspired dressing. I flipped through GQ today and gosh... if only more guys would get creative with their clothes, women would have no problems dealing with their porn/football fetishes. well, maybe. :)

p/s My legs look like shit... and I'm not making excuses because I could definitely use a bit more exercise, but it's the angle. it's definitely the angle. ;) I'm not going to dwell on it, and i regret pointing it out but that's that.

Victoria Secret's Blushing Stick in So Flushed for only $9.99.

I love VS's semi-annual sale. I go a bit crazy waiting for the sales to come around then embark on a mad shopping spree on all things sexy, and that includes fabulous makeup! Admittedly, not all their makeup is great but I bought this blind and I'm totally floored by how wonderful it is.

This is basically a huge cheek stain and even though it's a dark purplish color in its tube, it actually swipes on in a glorious, 'i-just-did-it!' pink hue. I dab on a little on the apples of my cheeks and blend with my ring finger and voila, instant natural flush that lasts all day.

I like this so much better than any other cheek stain I've bought, most of which come in liquid formulas and streak or dry too quickly/slowly. This is a perfect combination of all things good about cream and liquid blushes. Absolutely lovely!

I love the (non)shape of this jacket. It's so fresh for me. Especially since I'm used to things being nipped and tucked in... I'm breaking out of my comfort zone here guys! And also, fuck people who say Asians can't wear yellow. anyone can wear whatever the hell they want. throw out the fashion rules and create your own, right?

Anyway, here's to breathable clothing that I can flop around in. Especially on cold, rainy days like this one.

Amped-up candy colors are really in this season -- nail colors, block prints, shoes, head gear and of course, make up! Everybody can wear bright colors, you just need to take some time to figure out what your undertones are and match them to your makeup for the best fit. But honestly, if you're anything like me and you just like to play (makeup comes off so easily after all!) and you're fickle, then HELL, try it all!

So I decided to give it a shot: I picked up M.A.C Lipstick in Impassioned, a matte, bright fuschia shade for $14.80.... and swiped it on, fearing for the worst, but what do you know? It didn't look that bad! It's not going to work on all skintones (in fact, I don't think it's completely suitable for me) but it's so easy to mix it with other shades and find the right fit for this true-pink shade.

Suggestions: Keep the porn-star factor low by going really neutral with the rest of your makeup. all I have on is some powder, blush and eyeliner and I let my lips do the talking. ;) Or play it down by blotting it and swiping on some clear gloss. Also, since it's REALLY matte, make sure your lips are really moisturized or it'll just look flaky and disgusting and with color so eye-catching, you had better be sure your lips look nothing less than incredible.

This is the least edited picture I have. No flash, soft lighting. The color is pretty hard to capture on film but I gave it a shot! It looks bright and intense in real life.

Truly, the point of this post was just to encourage everyone to experiment with their makeup. Try on those wacky colors. Nothing is permanent guys! Too few women (especially those of color) dare to go the distance...why? We have distinct and unique features and we should play them up!

(and I have the hoodie from Forever 21 on because I was cold..it's a really cute mustard color with a trapeze shape and it was on sale for only $5! Plus it was raining outside at that point and it felt like appropriate. Anyway, why should i be justifying my clothes in a makeup picture? I'm going to stop now...)

i wouldnt say this is a fool-proof outfit, because i just threw on a tunic top and wore it out to party. i bought this dress in bangkok for about 240 baht, which is about 12 sgd? abit pricier than i usually would pay for while in thailand, but the quality for this dress is really good and it's rather versatile, seeing i could pair it with tights, or skinny jeans and pumps, great for date night or chilling with the chicas out about town. and well seeing that i am not so tall, i could alternatively just throw it on as a dress. which is a good thing when going out to a party because i hate having to figure out what to wear sometimes. just throw on a dress, and im done. of course, dont forget cute shoes. i wore this with green ballet flats, of which i didnt manage to take a picture of because this is a self-shot. since the dress is white, with blue stripes, it can be rather plain and boring, so go wild with footwear, the fancier, the better. :) i had on white plastic clip ons for a retro, 80's look, combined with that big arm band you see on me. retro and cute, that's just me.

petite girls, take it from me. never ever think tunics are too long for u and give them up, wear them as dresses, they're just too cute! hell even as dresses they may be a little too long for comfort, but that's where belts come in, cinch it at your hips/waist and you're good to go baby. you never have to worry about what to wear anymore. swear by this mantra, throw on and go. of course, i can promise you'll look cute too, dont worry.:)

mary: grr! I am so jealous of you! I wish I had the balls to wear a tunic top all on it's own! Unfortunately I'm a bit too insecure about my wobbly thighs to pull this off ;) I absolutely ADORE that dress; it looks so minimalist and chic! Love it!

i've always had a thing for victoria's secrets and needless to say, their runway shows are always nothing less than spectacular. i love everything about it, the hair, the make up, the line up of underwear displayed. there's just so much energy going on all around, and all that glitz and glamour is enough to make me a happy camper, sitting here in my room watching these models do their thang.

obviously metallic is in this season, and it makes me wonder who the hell wears all that bling underneath their clothes, but good underwear is the key to making u feel sexy. and when u feel sexy, that's when the real confidence comes.

Miss Ashley Olsen. Multi-millionaire and still a student, absolutely gorgeous and one-half of a twin empire. And when all is said and done, I do believe that Ashley is the better dresser of the Olsen twins.Her clothes are always stylish and classic -- none of Mary-Kate's wacky experiments. Ashley knows what looks good on her and goes with it. For casual days out she loves skinny jeans, sky-high pumps and layers...all tastefully done, of course.
Let's not forget the oversized bag, adorable eye-wear (who the hell can look as cute as her in thick 80s-frame glasses!?), simple bracelets and swept-back hair. The result is a polished and urban enough for the big city, and yet, so casual and laissez-faire. Love it!

Plaid Fringe Scarf from Urban Outfitters for $24.

This is a cool look. For the moment. I think $24 is a bit too much to pay for a bit of cloth; you could easily dig up some old plaid and toss it casually around your neck. I love the casual-coolness of the scarf, it's a great alternative to boring old winter wools and best of all, light enough that you could wear it even through Spring.

Best paired with something light and basic.. too many clashing patterns will just be an eye sore! Also, avoid anything vaguely cowboy-ish... no boots, hats, leather, etc.! You don't want to look like you just walked off a farm..

And this is why I love clothes. Because it's like a big costume party in my head and everybody's invited! Today I'm Peter Pan. Or a cool pirate. Like Keira Knightly, only Asian and without the horse-jaw.

Everything I'm wearing here I bought in Dallas yesterday. I went on this mad shopping binge in Northpark Mall with some pretty good results (if I do say so myself!)

- White blouson shirt from Mango (it was on sale!)..although really, any old man-shirt will do. But I loved the little cuffed-sleeve detailing with the ribbons, and how it was the perfect thigh-skimming length. Makes it look slightly girly, while still retaining the 'I sleep in my boyfriend's clothes' look.

-Black tights from Forever 21. Of course. I love my tights!

- Cool suede ("Shortie") boots from Urban Outfitters. God, that place is really indie-central isn't it? I would like to imagine that all those indie kids are picking up their clothes from thrift stores and Goodwill/Salavation Army and garage sales but nope, I think they come from Outfitters!

(I'm pointing them out because my boyfriend kept cropping my feet out of the picture, which is dumb, seeing as my boots were practically the highlight of my outfit!)

I'm so easy to please!! I promise I won't be wearing tights in my next outfit ;)

Longer Lashes!

I picked up Lash Injection from Too Faced this weekend from Sephora ($19.50) and I looove it! It's not for everybody, but it's one of the best mascaras I've tried.

Pros: Huge mascara wand; relatively clump-free which is impressive; volumizes my lashes like no other and best of all, lenghtens them! My boyfriend asked me if I was wearing false lashes when he saw me after application....! Also, they held the curl in my lashes well...other mascaras weigh them down and return them to their poker-straight, downward-pointing ways. Which...makes the use of mascara completely pointless!

Cons: The huge wand might be a problem for those less experienced with mascaras, and also, instead of the normal fibre technology employed by other mascaras, Lash Injection lengthens/volumizes by using 'tubes'...like little 'socks' around your eyelashes. Which is kinda weird. And also, you should probably use makeup remover when trying to get it off..and you need to tug on your eyelashes and the 'tubes' will slide off...but it's still kinda weird and takes getting used to.

Give this mascara a try if you've got some spare cash!

Easy Going

I've worn this, or some variation thereof, about three times this month. It's so simple and comfy, and you just got to love it.

White tunic top....

Ankle tights or skinny jeans -- depending on the length of your top. If it hits ABOVE your ass, wear jeans! If it hits below, then tights are prefable because the band of your jeans might bulk you up around the hip/waist area...not a good look if you're on the chunky side like me!

Cute shoes are a must. I guess you could wear flipflops, but I think it would look a bit too lazy. You're going for casual cool but with some thought here...

..and finally, a lightweight, long skinny scarf. Just knot it loosely around your neck.

Some mild accessories: bangle, gold chain necklace worn as a bracelet, fabric hoop earrings. and my failsafe big bag (featured in every other post of mine! But don't worry, i'll be getting some new bags this weekend, woohoo!), and a ton of rings. I love my rings. :)

Well, get your act together -- this is Elf, Hitchiker's guide to the Galaxy, Almost Famous and Bridge to Terabithia's Zooey Deschanel!
There's something totally offbeat and yet impossibly intelligent about her. She pulls off some bizarre outfits just because she looks like she woke up one morning and thought, "what? I'm going to put this ribbon on my head. It's cool." and that was that, and nothing could or would sway her mood.

I love her selection of swingy, printed tops, dark bottoms, the cute little purses she carries, and that ever-so-sexy dishevelled hair. I love her fearless sense of style and how spot-on she is all the time. Oh and you know what? She's not just a pretty face. She's incredibly talented too.

Quasi-Victorian.. sans the bustle

Ok, this outfit ISN'T entirely foolproof, I will be the first to admit that. But considering I didn't have much time to put it all together before I left, I think it'll do in a cinch. I got mine for $70 from Blum & Co. in Singapore but I'm sure there are others out there that may be more affordable. I (lazily) paired the gorgeous, frilly top with skinny jeans and pumps and decided aginst any accessories (for once!) because I didn't want anything to distract from the beautiful pleats and detailing.
(sorry about the emo-looking pic. Very Myspace-worthy.)

Prior to getting this, I thought it looked kinda dumb on the rack and I wasn't very convinced. But I tried it on for the hell of it (and also because the salesgirls wouldn't leave me alone...they're very persistent!) and what do you know? I thought it was incredible!

The key really lies in the cut. I know my Betty Boop pose really didn't help any, but find one that suits your body shape, regardless of size (no point fussing over a size S or M just to feed your ego). Make sure they fit around your shoulders so the puffy-sleeves look glamarous and interesting, not like you have elephantine arms!

Also, look for one that has darts around the torso area so your waist looks nipped in. An all-around floaty Victorian blouse (especially one that's high-necked as shown) is going to make you look nothing short of maternal.

And last but not least, this really is an outfit on it's own. Don't try to dress it up or down to much; simplicity is key. If you're not ready to rock it completely, how about trying a vest? It'll give it a more casual look. Or if your Victorian top isn't quite as detailed, then by all means, load up on some necklaces. Perhaps a nice gold locket for that ancient feel?

So, this is my boyfriend's cousin, Rodrigo. He's got great style -- even the frat boys think he's 'pimp' ;)

Apparently he picked up his top from Hot Topic. I can't believe they actually sell clothes without skulls/bones/vampires/stupid catchphrases on them!! Kudos to him for finding one that actually looks really indie and avant-garde. In fact when I first saw it, I thought he had made it himself/bought it at some random garage sale. You know, something very obscure. A shirt with a story behind it, not one duplicated in China.

...But the good thing about having shirts from franchise stores is everyone gets to buy one and look cool!

Oh yeah, and I like the little headband too. I've seen a LOT of guys try to pull that off, and most fail miserably but, lucky for him, not here. :)

To add to all the coolness, he's also part of a really talented band called O Scarlet, definitely drop by their Myspace and check them out.

Since it is near impossible for me to write an objective style-nalysis, I must await Jo's further input. :)

but moving along... id have to say the get up is really simple, and clean. just the way i like it. sometime's simplicity's the way to go, it isnt over the top or screams 'look at me'. just a 'hey, look ure cool, im cool, we're all cool.' chill, relax and walk down easy street man. life's too rushed and we've all gotta take it easy. the headband definitely adds some attitude and funk. but the point i'm trying to make here is, you definitely dont need alot to become a style icon. not at all.:)
although! he could have done with some nice beaded bracelets, just to add to that indie feel. nonetheless, good job!

This outfti from Day Birger et Mikkelsen is absolutely gorgeous. It's from their Resort 2007 collection and is perfect for summer as I know it right now -- warm, dry, and sporadically rainy (damn Texan weather).
The all-white ensemble looks clean and polished and the beautiful black detailing and red trim give it a little bit of interest and..I don't know, something vaguely Dutch-Milkmaid. Which in this case, really works for me! And can we forget that key piece: the braided belt? Hang on to those things people! They always come back into style and are great for pulling outfits together in a cinch (get it, get it? ha!)

Whatever it is, white shirtdresses are SO in this season. Alternatively, get yourself a long t-shirt, tuck it into a pretty skirt (of the same white shade mind you! check it in daylight, not under flourescent lighting!) and whip a belt around your lithe waist and voila, instantly classy and chic.

Shu Uemura, Shiseido and some even swear that E.L.F. make good ones; ones that actually work on these wimpy, stick-straight Asian eyelashes.
C'mon people, don't give in to the slit-eyed Oriental stereotype; widen those peepers and give people a chance to see the colors of your irises! Most days, all I wear is some blush, gloss, and attack my eyelashes (my boyfriend is terrified that I will rip my eyelashes out by the roots some day but touch wood, that hasn't happened!) and voila, instant babydoll look -- not too fussy or messy, but clean and neat.

i was in bangkok's siam square getting my hair done, when this gorgeous young thing came walking in. i looked like shit, wrapped up like a friggin chinese bun while he looked amazingly cute next to me. unfortunately i was alone when i saw him, because yos and the rest were out getting lunch. but they came back in and the first thing i did was to grab yos by her hands and tell her to fucking look to the right. she did and her eyes went wide opened. that's how good he looked baby. we tried in our every might to get a good picture of him, but this was the best. we conversed in chinese so the locals wouldnt understand us, discussing every possible way to get his picture. in this picture he had a pony tail tied up his front, but he still manages to look cute. it's not everyday you find someone who can pull such a thing off. he's a superstar if you didn't know, a thai singer, apparently. who cares, to me, he's cute, that's all i need to know.

on a side note, everyone should go to bangkok just because the city's amazing. you can find anything, and everything at ridiculously cheap prices. dresses are 5 bucks, if you buy it at wholesaler prices, and footwear ranges from 8 sgd- 15 sgd. food's amazing, coffee's the best, and fags are 2 sgd a box. what's not to like? i love bangkok, ive been there twice this year and it never falls short of my expectations. partying is free, no cover charges in clubs, and alcohol can be drunk like water. now, that's the kinda life we all ought to be living. :) i missed vogue-this-bitch(vtb) though, hence im back and will post more pics of my buys soon. xoxo

talking about style icons:

i dont care what others say about her, kate moss is my style icon. she may be trashy with her druggie boyfriend and coke problems of her own, but she's got an amazing sense of style. her willowy frame, her hair hung loosely over her shoulders, she still looks fucking fantastic even in nothing but jeans and a tank top. it's such a shame she's with peter dohetry, who's a complete douchebag and looks like shit next to her.

it's not everyday a supermodel can make an impact as she has to the fashion industry. id love to have her confidence and sexiness, her laidback and chilled sense of style and of course as always, long legs and thin frame. she never fails to look amazingly good, in anything. and ive gotta say, despite all her coke problems, she still looks good on camera. now, not everyone's able to pull THAT off:) kate moss, i love u, even if the world hates u.well, that's me trying to pull a kate moss. a babydoll top, cuffed shorts, and aviators. of course, her signature flip flops and boho shoulder-on bag. i just missed out on the hair and never-ending legs. but whatever, i tried. and i like it:)

Blot it to a stain or layer it for gorgeous red lips. The dark red (with bluish undertones) really bring out the white of my teeth. Oh, and my chapped lips? Yeah, these help them stay moisturized and soft all day long. And Jo will remember how those endless nights of drinking, dancing and making merry would not budge this baby. They'd be as intense after 7 hardcore, lip-smacking hours as they were to start with.

The bad (being objective here)? Pricier that drugstore brands of course (but it's well worth it), and also if you're not used to red/dark lips, this will have to grow on you. Try starting out with deep pink shades, or perhaps red glosses, to avoid the steep learning curve. Also, with color so intense, you need a steady hand and confidence to pull it off.

But of course, once you figure it out..there's no turning back!

Oh wow. I wear the same type of clothes over and over again. Just in different colors. I am vaguely (but only vaguely) ashamed of myself and my lack of stylistic creativity.

Green babydoll, over a long white graphic tunic top, with a vintage belt, skinny jeans, bright-colored wedges, bangles and a long chain necklace. oh, and some grr-attitude to go with the red lip color ;)
I promise to try something new next time guys. I will not be in a fashion rut.

Lily Allen

Every once in a fashion age, there comes an icon who doesn't even realize it. Lily Allen is one of those icons. I love her. Everything about her. The euroclash neon-bright Crayola-explosion colored clothes, the ribbons in her hair, the thick eyeliner that makes her look more fresh-punk than Brigitte Bardot (thank god), the huge hoop earrings and dainty pendant necklaces, the babydoll dresses that no one else would dare to wear with as much panache.
Most of all, I love her devil-may-care attitude. Every picture of Lily has her smiling, throwing the deuces or sticking her tongue out and just generally being herself, totally comfortable in her skin, and having a rockin' good time while she's at the height of her popularity. Oh, did I mention that her music's pretty cool too? I think we are so over the emo garbage that pop princesses (read: hilary duff and avril lavigne, etc) churn out all day long. Honesty is good. In music. In fashion. In life.
What can I say? I have a new fashion icon. Lily Allen, I salute you!
